Every June I get the same call: a family wants to spend the day climbing the dune at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park and watching the kids burn off energy on that long Lake Michigan beach, but they don’t own an RV and don’t want to drive one. That’s where a P.J. Why Hoffmaster is a day-trip, not a camp-in-the-park spot

P.J. Hoffmaster sits right on Lake Michigan between Muskegon and Grand Haven, about a 40–45 minute run from my Hudsonville lot — I take I-196 west, then cut north toward Pontaluna Road. The park’s whole draw is the towers of dune and three miles of undeveloped beach, plus the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center with that boardwalk stairway up to the overlook. What it doesn’t have is the kind of paved, electric-and-water campsite loop you’d find at Holland or Grand Haven State Parks. There’s a group outdoor center, but no everyday RV hookup campground. So when someone asks me to “drop the camper at Hoffmaster,” I tell them straight: we can’t legally park and camp a rig in a day-use lot. Instead I deliver to a real campground close by, and you make the short hop to the dunes each morning.

Where I actually set up your RV near Hoffmaster

The closest full-hookup overnight spot for Hoffmaster visitors is Grand Haven State Park just south, with its sites packed right onto the beach and the Grand Haven pier and lighthouse a walk away. It books up fastest, so reserve early. A little inland I send a lot of families to Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Holland when they’ve got young kids — the pool and activities sell themselves, and it’s an easy drive up US-31 to Hoffmaster. Holland State Park near Big Red is another option if you want the Macatawa channel scene. For a quieter, woodsier base, Hungry Horse Campground and the bigger Sandy Pines Camping Resort down toward Allegan County give you room to spread out. Whichever you pick, I’ll deliver, level, and set up the RV on your site so it’s ready the second you check in.

How delivery and setup works

You don’t tow anything, you don’t back into anything. I bring the RV to your reserved campground site, get it level, drop the stabilizers, and walk you through how everything runs — the water, the power, the slides if it has them, and the basics of dumping at the end. When your trip’s over, I come get it. That’s the part that makes this work for the GRR-flight crowd and for folks coming in from Grand Rapids, Zeeland, or Wyoming who just want the cottage experience without buying a 30-foot trailer. A few things worth knowing before you book:

  • Book early for summer and Tulip Time. May through August fills up fast around the Lake Michigan parks, and Holland’s Tulip Time in early May empties the local campgrounds quick. If Hoffmaster’s beach is your goal, lock the campground site first, then we schedule the RV.
  • Reserve the campground yourself. Michigan state park sites go through the state reservation system, and the private parks handle their own — I deliver to whatever site you’ve secured.
  • Tell me your group size and the site number. Some loops run short or have a tight turn, and that changes which rig I send. A smaller trailer fits where a big motorhome won’t.
  • Ask about what’s included. Inclusions vary by location and by the specific RV, so call or email me and I’ll tell you exactly what comes with the unit you’re looking at.
  • Plan your Hoffmaster days around the heat. The dune climb is brutal in full afternoon July sun — morning beach, midday shade at the visitor center boardwalk, late-day sunset over the water is how the locals do it.

What the weather and seasons feel like out here

West Michigan summers are the whole reason people drive to this stretch of lakeshore. June through early September is warm and the Lake Michigan water finally turns swimmable by July. The flip side is the wind — that open beach at Hoffmaster catches it, so I tell people to pack a windbreaker even in August, and to expect cool nights that make the RV furnace nice to have. Spring around Tulip Time can still be chilly and damp, and fall along the dunes is gorgeous and quiet once the crowds thin after Labor Day. If you’re chasing the warmest beach days, aim for mid-July through mid-August.

Make a whole West Michigan trip out of it

One of the best things about basing near Hoffmaster is how much else sits within an easy drive. From a Grand Haven or Holland campground you’ve got the Big Red lighthouse, the Saugatuck Dunes, Windmill Island Gardens, and the Grand Haven boardwalk all close. Run inland on I-196 and M-6 and you’re at Frederik Meijer Gardens, John Ball Zoo, and downtown Grand Rapids in well under an hour. Plenty of my renters do three or four days: beach mornings at Hoffmaster, an afternoon in Holland or Saugatuck, maybe a day in the city. The RV at the campground stays your steady, comfortable home base the whole time.
